Never Quit Quittin'

We are proud to announce that we will be carrying the torch of Chile's Quit Now Challenge into the month of August and - we hope - beyond. The spirit of this challenge is to reduce our energy intensive habits in light of future prospects of declining energy and resource abundance which have come under the umbrella term "peak oil." The idea is to precondition ourselves to the possibility that many of the luxuries we enjoy today may not be so widely available in the future, and thereby reduce "peak oil's" potential to negatively affect our livelihood or our psyche. We do so by choosing an energy intensive habit or product and swearing it off for one month. Each week, we will "check in" to update our progress, sharing any tips and tricks we've learned or making excuses for our failure. :-) We encourage participants to do the same.

Choosing a pledge...

Some of the most energy intensive habits we have are actually quite simple and easy to cease. It varies from person to person, but for most, locally sourcing something we usually get from far away or giving up bananas (you get social justice points as a side benefit here) can be reasonably accessible ways of reducing our impact on the environment and the energy supply. Other examples might be more difficult like going vegan, vegetarian, or locavore for the month - or giving up your car.

These are but a few examples; it's really up to you what habit you choose. There are no "cop-out" options. Anything consistent with the spirit of the challenge is perfectly acceptable. We want those who pledge to be successful in completing the challenge because we believe it will encourage perseverance among the "quitters." So, we do not recommend making an overly ambitious pledge. It should still, however, be a challenge. It's up to you to decide what is most reasonable for you. We suggest you begin from where you are.

So start thinking about your habits, the things you consume, how you get around, and please, seriously consider taking part in this challenge. At the end of the month, even if you experience bumps along the way, you should feel a sense of pride for giving your best effort. Do not feel bad if you slip up in this challenge. It isn't about "winning"; it's about preparing ourselves and showing ourselves that we can do it. Just get back up and try again.

Sign me up...

If you decide you'd like to take part in the challenge (which we hope you do), just leave a comment on this post, and tell us what you want to "quit".

We encourage participants who have one to place the graphic above on their blog or website, To do so, copy the following code and follow the directions below.

  • Select Text
  • Type whatever you want for the title or leave it blank
  • Click Edit Html
  • Paste the code you copied in the body
  • Then click Rich Text to confirm the image shows up
  • Save.
When you view your blog you should now see the bell curve image.

For the month of August, we will continue on with our take out/eating out hiatus, with one exception, the 1st of August, we will be going out to eat for an early celebration of my birthday (which is not until the 10th), but beyond that, no restaurant food. We are also going to make sure to turn off all unnecessary appliances when not in use, this is not limited to, but includes: computers, speakers, lights, power bars, etc.

The Challenge will begin on August 1, so you have one week to decide if and what you would like to quit. We will do a weekly check-in post every Friday starting August 8th.

'Til next time!

I want to join this challenge. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, but now I think I'm ready to give it a try. Thanks for taking over the hosting of this challenge!

I have to think about what I'm going to give up but I wanted to say if you fill your dishwasher all the way and it's not super old then it's better for the environment and your health than hand washing.

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Bobbi - Glad to hear it! Just let us know what you want to "quit", and we'll put you up on the "quitters" sidebar.

Not a problem, we were thrilled that Chile passed the torch on to us!

Lisa - Take your time, you've got a whole week to decide!

I had originally commented, but then after Brett did some research, I realized we were wrong in our initial assumption that our dishwasher was old. It actually isn't all that old, it just sucks I think, a lot of the time we run it, we end up having to re-wash some of the dishes in the sink anyway. You are right though, and you have a very good point We're going to have to think on this for awhile and perhaps come up with something else to quit for the month.

Thank you for the informative comment Lisa!

I really want to join this challenge. I'm thinking of giving up bananas and SEVERELY reducing the number of paper towels we use (like only for wrapping the leafy produce in to keep it from spoiling). But I might change my mind before this starts. Cuz I do that sometimes. ;)

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Chessa - Wonderful! Don't worry at all about changing your mind, that's why we put the challenge post up a week before it started. We'll go ahead and put you on the "I Quit!" list for bananas and paper towel reduction and if you want to change it, we'll update the sidebar! Welcome to the challenge!

I'm in for another month. I'm going to give up take out for one more month as I had one slip up in July. I'm also going to give up dying my hair and suck it up and enjoy my couple of gray strands.

lengslog said...

what a cool challenge! Sign me up! I still have to consider what to quit though....I've reduced my paper bag and paper towel consumption by using canvas bags, cloth towels. Sold my car...bought a bike, but have not used it much...maybe I should so I could escape from crazy weirdos following me home from school. LOL.....don't use much water...power...I think I'm going to try going vegan for the whole month of August. I don't think that should be too hard to do right..? haha I have to admit I have been eating a lot of dairy (ahem...fage).

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Bee - Welcome to the challenge. I love that you are choosing to give up hair dye! Grey hairs are nothing to be ashamed of, growing older only makes us more wise, and we as women should never be ashamed of our age!

Leng - I know, that's why I'm so happy Chile passed the torch on to Brett and I.

You've done so much! I'm so proud of you!

Awesome! We'll go ahead and sign up for going vegan for the month. Don't worry if you have a few slip ups Leng, it's all about trying. And if you want to change your mind, feel free to come back and change what you want to quit!

I'm gonna give up coffee for a month from August 9 (after the Tibet action).

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Cookiemouse - You are braver than I! We stopped drinking coffee daily awhile back, but the thought of not having it, oh man, it almost brings tears to my eyes. I think that will probably be the one thing that I give up kicking and screaming (and it would probably be chocolate for Brett).

Welcome to the challenge!

selina said...

hmmm....i think i'd like to participate. not sure what i will give up though. i'm gonna talk to jason about it & get him involved too.

thanks for doing the challenge!

Courtney said...

I really want to participate too, but I am having a hard time coming up with what to give up! Hmmm...maybe pineapple? I LOVE pineapple, but it obviously does not grow in the mid-west!

I will keep thinking, though...I feel like I could/should do more.

Courtney

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Selina - Awesome, definitely talk to Jason first. You don't want to commit to anything that would affect him without his consent. It is important that during the course of our lifestyle changes we do not leave our partners behind or go farther than they want to go. As it's been said before "what is the point of saving the world if you don't have anyone to share that world with?"

No problem, just let us know if and when you decide what you want to quit.

Courtney - Actually pineapple is an excellent choice. It's something you enjoy very much, but you understand that it cannot be grown in your area, and should our situations get worse, it will be one of the first aspects of your life that has to go. Giving up avocados was hard for us, and it didn't seem like much, but every little bit counts. Don't knock your efforts, I think you made a great choice.

We'll go ahead and mark you down for pineapples, if you decide you want to do something different, or do not want to participate in the challenge, just let us know.

Alice (in Veganland) said...

I have never signed up for a challenge, but since I heard of this one (in your blog of course ;-)) I haven't bought any avocados, and only one pineapple, and I have almost only bought local veggies. And I think I can say after much effort I've managed to cut up the amount of plastic packages we generate (although that is extremely difficult, everything is so "well" packed...).

But what I want to quit are store-bought vegan cookies. I snack on them all the time, and it's a lot of plastic and paper for just a few cookies, and they don't even taste that good. (But I will make an hiatus from 9-11 August. I have a wedding and have to travel a lot and can't really promise anything for those days)

Chile said...

Hey, Jennifer, glad you're getting a good response over here. :)

I hope to have my new challenge sign-up ready on Monday.

VeganCowGirl said...

Great post, great challenge and a great 'quit'. I pledge to quit eating bananas (that is a great one! and something I do almost every morning).

I am also pledging to up my intake of non-processed food - so no more rice cakes or soy milk.

Excellent stuff!! Thanks for the motivation.

Bobbi said...

Okay - I can go along with the "not eating out", but I need an exemption for August 6th, my birthday. We always eat Chinese for my birthday! But, with the exception of that date, I'm all for not eating out during August!

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Alice - That is wonderful Alice! I still haven't had an avocado, even though that is not something we are giving up for the month of July. It feels really nice to know that I don't NEED avocados. I will still have them every once in awhile, but I won't be buying them very often at all.

I am so proud of you for all the things you have been doing Alice.

We've got you down for vegan cookies for the month of August. Good luck and welcome to the challenge.

Chile - Thanks, we are too!

We'll make sure to link to your new challenge as soon as it is up!

Vegan CowGirl - Thanks.

Wonderful, bananas are one of the best things you can cut from your diet as most of us do not live anywhere near where bananas are produced. And, as noted in the introduction to the challnge, you also get social justice points for not eating bananas as you aren't supporting the horrible atrocities that occur on banana plantations.

Wow, you are really making a challenge for yourself! Wonderful!

Thanks so much for joining up! Welcome to the challenge.

Bobbi - That sounds great! My birthday is August 10th, so we decided to go out to eat the 1st of August to "get it out of the way", so we both agree that going out to eat once for your birthday is perfectly acceptable.

Welcome to the challenge!

One quick question, it seems that part of the image code to add the side bar widget is missing. I would like to add it to my blog. Could you post it again please?

Wet Blanket said...

Kaleidescope,

I assume you're using a browser other than Internet Explorer or at least have different settings. I've tested it several times on our browser, and it works, but I don't know how to edit the HTML so that it displays properly on other browsers.

I'll be working more with HTML over the coming weeks/months, but in the meantime, you could just email us at kungpaojen@hotmail.com and we'll reply with the code. 'Cause who knows how long it will take me to figure that one out?

If anyone could spare me the hassle of having to study it myself...

Seriously I need to break the challenge habit. I need a break. Do not get me wrong folks- I appreciate that I am a former consumer addict, note former thanks to Crunchy CHicken's Don't buy nuthin' challenge,And speaking of THe CHicken, thanks to her I now pee on my garden and compost, all the time while sweatin my ass off. Thanks to chile I use to eat at restaurants daily, now I take my lunch to work, and I broke the habit of diet pop. And I aint giving up my coffee and tea. ANd thanks to the Crunchy Domestic Goddess, I take a measly 5 minute Shower and thanks to Melinda- I am worried night and day about my borage. I just cannot handle another challenge at this time!

Robj98168 said...

Don't get me wrong- I am not complaining although it may sound like I am- I just don't have anything pressing to give up. BUt I promise to look at my lifestyle in the next month and see if there is something that needs intervention.

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Rob - No excuses necessary, I completely understand that all these challenges can get overwhelming.

If you think of something, stop by and join up next month.

Chile said...

Oh, c'mon, Jennifer. You're not seriously gonna let Rob off that easy, are you? He's just beggin' for some pushing and prodding. He wants to be in the challenge. He likes being challenged. ;-)

kaleidescopeliving said...

Jennifer,

You are right, I was using Firefox. To get the code I just took a look at the post in Explorer and grabbed the information.

Sorry to have been a bother and sorry if you get this twice. Open ID didn't work quite the same way as I expected while in Explorer.

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Chile & Rob - Perhaps I should take some lessons in persuasion from you Chile!

Rob - If prodding is indeed what you need, consider yourself prodded. I'm SURE you can find SOMETHING in your life that you could reduce your consumption of, right? I mean, I know you say you are perfect, but couldn't you maybe be a little more perfect? :-)

Kaleidescopeliving - Wonderful!

You weren't a bother at all, these are things we need to address when holding these challenges.

What are you "quitting" this month so I can add you to the sidebar?

http://kaleidescopeliving.wordpress.com/ said...

I am quitting buying lunch in the cafeteria on campus. In addition to be served on disposable plates and made with non-organic/ non-local foods it is always disappointing, unhealthy, and expensive.

I will also give up impulse purchases of magazines. August will be a no magazine purchase month with one exception; the exception is Chicago's new Edible Chicago as soon as I find it.

I also need to quit making excuses about going to the gym but that doesn't really save resources. At least not in the short-term but more fitness would make more of my world walkable which could in the long-term.

I'm going to try to give up purchasing things packaged in plastic. I've really enjoyed--well, not enjoyed but learned from--Chile's two months, and I'm so pleased you've continued it!

Chile said...

Ok, taking the lazy way out, I'll be joining this challenge using the same stuff as in my new one. (I don't care if this is cheating!)

I will quit eating too many desserts and more food than I need.

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Kaleidescope - Good choices! Especially the cafeteria food. I used to eat on campus more often, but everything is loaded down with packaging, comes from who knows where, and costs a ton, so you'll save money and probably have better, tastier food this way.

We've got you marked down, welcome!

Purloined Letter - Haha, well I have to agree, while I wouldn't say I've "enjoyed" the challenges, it has given me a lot of confidence that I have the will power to get over my habits and addictions.

Got you down for the packaging, welcome!

Chile - Hahaha, I felt that way when I signed up for your challenge.

Mindless munching is a tough one. If I didn't need the extra calories I would probably work on the snacking as well (it can push off actual meal time). Perhaps maybe I should eat larger, or more frequent meals. I just start to get uncreative. If I had to plan 4-6 small meals a day instead of 3 and snacks, it would take me hours to plan our weeks meals! So vegan cookies, nuts and fruit, and other random baked goods help keep me from having to buy yet another new wardrobe.

I am always surprised at how much activity I get in daily not owning a car. I am really not trying to be a smart ass here - I really didn't know until we gave up the car, and the pounds started melting off.

Perhaps an idea for a new challenge at some point? The swear off your car/shed some pounds challenge?

Hi Jennifer, nice to meet your blog. I'm going to continue with the quitting Kleenex and other non-recycled tissue, but this month going to make it basically giving up tissues (for me personally, my household's definitely not there) --and since I signed up for Chile's new challenge, let's add quitting mindless eating (since I'll spend every eating minute of August thinking about whether what I'm eating is within the parameters of my commitment to Chile's challenge).

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

SusanB - Nice to "meet" you as well and welcome to the challenge. We've got you marked down for Kleenex (and other non-recycled tissues) and avoiding mindless eating.

Do you have a blog or anything you would like us to link to on the "quitters" sidebar? I didn't notice a link to your blog in the message, so I just had to link to this comment area.

SusanB said...

No blog or other place to link to, Jennifer. Who has time, with all these challenges :-)

Domestic Accident said...

I'm giving up my weekly iced coffee from DD.

Green Plan(t) said...

First off, thank you for taking the torch on this one. I've learned a lot about my habits, and how much waste they can create, with the last two months so I was definitely hoping to continue.

I'm having a helluva time deciding what to pick for this month, though.

The one thing I can think of that I really need to cut back is online/computer time. I'll cut that back by 75%.

But I don't quite feel that's enough. It'll be a challenge, no doubt about that, but I don't feel it's enough impact in the spirit of the challenge. My problem is figuring out what else to do! We already hang all our clothes to dry, 99% of the products I use are natural, I intend to keep the a/c at 80 during the day (even beyond Crunchy's challenge), we rarely eat out... gah!

Wait, I know! I will go back to cloth diapering my son (in addition to our new baby). So that challenge will be to reduce disposable diaper use by 50%. YES!

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Domestic Accident - Good choice! I've got you marked down, welcome!

Green Plan(t) - I love your handle first off, great double meaning.

It IS often difficult to think of something, but once I started thinking, I already have next months picked out.

Got you down for a 75% reduction in internet usage and a 50% reduction in disposable diapers. Welcome to the challenge!

poopiebitch said...

I found you through Alice (in Veganland)'s blog, and oh wow, what a great idea! It looks like I'm just in time, too.

I will quit using plastic bags! I have tote bags that I try to use, but I've gotten really lazy about remembering to take them to the store. No more!

I will also quit bananas (though I love them so).

And last (and most difficult), I will cut back how much my husband and I eat out... which is a lot. It's ridiculous, expensive, and because of where we live, we usually end up driving further than I'd care to admit. I can't promise to cut it out altogether next month, but how about 50%?

Wet Blanket said...

Poopiebitch - Welcome to the Challenge! We, too, have a similar problem with reusable tote bags; I remember to take them along but forget to pull them out of my backpack while waiting in line. So, the first few items usually wind up being pulled from a plastic bag into my belated tote. What plastic bags we do end up with get reused as catpoo bags when I clean the litterbox, which reminds me...

Green Plan(t) said...

Jennifer -

Thanks for the compliment! I love the double meaning too. Originally it was just Green Plant but I thought it sounded (and looked) too boring lol

Thanks again for hosting this challenge. :)

Jill P. said...

This is s great idea! I pledge to quit drinking coke and buying food stuff when I have a cabinet and freezer full of foods. I also pledge to quit using plastic and paper bags. This means I have to put my reusable bags in my car right now!

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Green Plan(t) - Hey no problem, I just thought it was really creative. I look back now and think maybe I should have had some sort of "handle", but creativity with titles is just not my specialty.

Thanks again for signing up!

Jill P. - Welcome! Wowsa, that's quite a list, all great choices too. We've got you marked down.

Welcome to the challenge and get set, it starts tomorrow!

Catherine said...

I'm going to squeek in at the last second! I quit long showers. I'm going to set a timer and limit myself to five minutes or less!

selina said...

Okay...so I'm joining.
I've done away with the Bananas.

This Month: Avocados, Lemons & Reduced Paper Towel Usage.

I currently have 1.5 Lemons sitting in my fridge. I will need a little for the peach freezer jam I'm making on Sunday. But I will buy none this month. No more Avocados.
And I, unfortunately, am a compulsive paper towel user.... so I'm gonna try & cut back. Here's to compulsions!!

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Catherine - It's never really too late to join, welcome aboard! Great choice.

Selina - Welcome to the challenge! And good luck you've really given yourself a challenge. But if you can stick to your guns, you'll feel so good about it, it's a wonderful feeling to know you don't NEED something and that, in many ways, you can do just as well without. I wouldn't recommend permanently giving up lemons, as they are a wonderful fruit and vital to food preservation, but it's nice to know you can do without unless they are really necessary. It's all about changing our perspective on how we purchase and consume energy intensive goods and services.

Lisa Sharp said...

I have totally given up paper napkins but that is not what I will do again this month. (I still won't be using them but since it's not the challenge I will use them if I'm some where I can't use cloth.)

For this month I will give up paper towels.

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Lisa - Great choice. Welcome to the challenge!

Liz said...

I know I'm late declaring my challenge selection, but I promise I've been doing it since Aug. 1.
No air conditioning for me, no matter how hot the house gets. We are blessed with central air, but try not to use it. This year, we'll go without!

Jennifer (of Veg*n Cooking) said...

Liz - Glad you signed up, no worries about being late. Good choice too, I hope it doesn't get too toasty in your neck of the woods.
