A Proper Relationship with Food

I was looking at Chandelle's awesome new recipe index (I hope you don't mind Chandelle, I'd like to do mine the same way), and I happened upon her first blog entry where she discussed the purpose of her blog. I have to say, she and I see eye to eye when it comes to our views on the appropriate relationship between ourselves and food and have some of the same concerns about people, even some in the vegan community. In my opinion, she hit the nail right on the head, especially in her resulting commentary to my response. It inspired me to do a post simply to link to it. I read it earlier this morning and have been thinking about it on and off all day. If you are at all interested, please take the time to read it. Her blog is excellent by the way, always full of yummy recipes (and sometimes funny stories about kids and cooking mishaps) and she relies on whole foods that are organic or fair trade and local wherever possible. She is living proof that we can (and should) 'vote with our dollars' and 'eat by our conscience' but not fool ourselves or make our lives difficult by trying to follow a purity of principle, it's just not possible.

'Til next time!

ah, yes. this is something i often think of and struggle with. i think about food far too often, more than I should and usually not because I'm truly hungry but because I am trying to satisfy a craving or an emotional need, i suppose.

Leng - :-)

Bianca - Her blog is one of my very favorite. I have so many of her recipes filed under the 'need to try', and I'd expect to see her Salsa Verde Enchiladas (using her suggested bean substitutes) in the coming weeks.

Chocolate Covered - No problem!

ChickPea - Welcome, and thanks!

Pleasantly - I think many people share this problem. I think eating is like anything, it can become habitual, and many habits are truly hard to break. Many things, while not harmful in moderation, can easily become addictive because they make us feel postive in certain ways, for some of us it's food, some exercise, some sex, you name it. I think this problems root could be any number of things, that's why it's so hard to respond to this comment, I think I'm trying to read to much into it. My first reaction was to barrage you with all sorts of questions, but then again, what do I know? This is probably just a bunch of rambling anyway....

That's a really great explanation of my thoughts on veganism (and food in general), too! I couldn't have said it better myself. :) Thank you for posting the link! I've never seen that blog before, and I really like it!

Jess - Not a problem at all. I'm glad that it resonanted with you. I think today many people have 'issues' with food at both extremes of the spectrum. I wish there was more I could do to promote a healthy outlook on food and teach people to develop healthy relationships with food, but again, as I said to Pleasantly, what do I really know. I am just fascinated with subjects such as these, there is such a psychological aspect to it, and as that is what my degree is in, I tend to be drawn to those sorts of things.

You should visit Chandelle's blog often, it is one of my favorites. Her pictures are always gorgeous, her food is always so tasty sounding, and very accessible. She uses so many whole foods and I've seen quite a few tasty Mexican recipes on there, which you know catch my eye.....
